SWAHILI 231 SYLLABUS

Course objectives

  1. To provide students with a foundation in speaking, reading, and writing the basic grammatical structures of Kiswahili.
  2. To introduce students to aspects of East African life and culture through the development of communication competence and cultural awareness in the Kiswahili language.

  1. Textbook: Bokamba, E.G. et al Tujifunze Kiswahili I
  2. Dictionary: Perrot . Swahili Dictionary

Course requirements

Regular attendance, punctual submission of thoroughly completed homework assignments, and otherwise generally respectable effort. There will be a midterm and a final exam that will have oral and written components. In addition there will be quizzes and end of chapter tests.

Evaluation

Evaluation of students' performance will be made on the basis of class participation, homework, quizzes and exams with the following weighting:

Attendance policy

All students are expected to be in class on time. Anyone who comes ten minutes after the hour will be admitted to the classroom and marked absent. Unless sanctioned by the University authorities, absences are unexcused. More than five unexcused absences will result in the lowering of student's final grade.
