Description

This vowel is marked with the sequence alifu + vao , with no diacritics, in detached and initial forms. In medial and final forms,"o" is marked with vao alone.

Note: In the word sonu 'gold', the o+n combination is not the same as the nasalized vowel on . In sonu the /n/ is in the onset of the second syllable: so.nu. which is why it is a full consonant and not the the nasal part of a vowel as in the nasal o vowel in the word saamhon 'in front of, before'.


Pronunciation Notes

This vowel is pronounced as long [o], as the vowel in American English "boat". The nasalized version is pronounced as in American English "bone".
