Note: the "h" in this letter marks aspiration; that is, the "gh" letter is formed from the combination of the symbol for "g" () followed by the symbol for "h" (), where the "h" is used to mark aspiration, and is not its own full consonant. To understand the difference between these two functions of "h", and some of the writing conventions regarding this letter please refer to the notes on the h-info page.


Pronunciation Notes

This letter represents the aspirated consonant [gh]. It is formed like a regular [g], but followed by a puff of breathy aspiration at the moment the [g] gesture at the back of the mouth is released. See SCRIPT BASICS: PRONUNCIATION TIPS FOR ASPIRATED CONSONANTS for more information.
