This letter represents the aspirated consonant [Dh]. It is a retroflex consonant, made by curling the tip of the tongue back a little bit as you would to make an American English "r" sound, but with the tongue tip making contact with the roof of the mouth towards the front of the domed portion. It is also an aspirated sound, pronounced strongly with a puff of breathy aspiration immediately on the opening of the [D] gesture. See SCRIPT BASICS: PRONUNCIATION TIPS FOR ASPIRATED CONSONANTS for more information. |
