Pronunciation Notes

This letter represents the consonant [x]. It is pronounced with the tongue in the same position as for [k] in American English (as in "king"), but it is a soft hissy (fricative) sound and not a full stop. This fricative sound does not occur in American English, but it is the same sound that occurs in German at the end of the name "Bach". See SCRIPT BASICS: LETTERS USED ONLY IN ARABIC WORDS for more information.
