Note 1: the "h" in this letter marks aspiration; that is, the "jh" letter is formed from the combination of the (word-initial) symbol for "j" () followed by the symbol for "h" (), where the "h" is used to mark aspiration, and is not its own full consonant. To understand the difference between these two functions of "h", and some of the writing conventions regarding this letter please refer to the notes on the h-info page.

Note 2: see SCRIPT BASICS: NOTES ON SINDHI SPELLING for use of the tilde symbol (~) in transcribing words with nasal sounds.

Pronunciation Notes

This letter represents the aspirated consonant [jh]. It is pronounced like a very strong version of the American English "j" (as in "jug"), with a puff of breathy aspiration immediately following. See SCRIPT BASICS: PRONUNCIATION TIPS FOR ASPIRATED CONSONANTS for more information.
