Linguistic Notes on Sindhi

This section will include information on geographic and religious linguistic variation, dialects, borrowings, and the like. It's also a logical place for the discussion of phonetic transcription, phonological facts about the language, and other relevant info (e.g., the phylum classification of the language as Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Northwestern zone, Sindhi and where it is spoken: Sindh (Pakistan), India, and other regions).

Geographic Variation

E.g., the final vowel in basu from basu, payo hale (Lesson 1 Grammar) where speakers vary in pronouncing the final vowel of this word as "i", "u" or "a" with no effect on the meaning and dictionary entries for this word do not specify a final vowel. In general, Sindhi speakers in India are losing these vowels, which are not preserved in the related languages, and the Sindhis in Sindh feel unhappy about this degradation of their language.

Religious Variation

E.g., greetings such as salaamu , used mostly by Muslims, and greetings such as namaste , used mostly by Hindus (Lesson 1 Grammar).

Borrowings

E.g., from Arabic (Salaamu ); discussion of how prevalent this is, etc.
