Lesson 1 Activities

The Lesson 1 dialog introduces you to some basic phrases and cultural practices, but don't be discouraged if you don't fully understand all the phrases at this point. You may also find it difficult or slow to read the dialog in the Sindhi script. Some tips to help you gain reading skills are offered here. Use the activities below with this lesson to practice reading Sindhi.

You will notice that you can open a pop-up window with a transcription of the Sindhi dialog. At first it will be difficult for you to read without such a transcription, which is why it is included in the beginning lessons. You should use this study-aid to start getting used to the Sindhi script. Try the following activities to help you with this undertaking.

1. Listen and Repeat: listen to each line of the dialog and repeat after the Sindhi speaker. You should make this a practice for all the spoken Sindhi sounds that appear in the lessons.

Print out the Sindhi dialog (use File: Print in your browser's menu) and the transcription in the pop-up window (use the "print window" link at the bottom of this page). You will use these printouts for the following 2 activities.

2. Practice Writing: copy the Sindhi dialog, line by line, adding the transcription in your notebook for each line of Sindhi script and the English translation below it. In your notebook for each line of dialog you should have 3 in the following order: Sindhi script, transcription using the Roman alphabet, and English translation. Here is an example of the first line in the dialog:

saaiin! chhuTalu
Sir!

3. Slice-and-Dice: slice the transcription printout into separate lines and try matching them to the printout of the dialog in Sindhi script. Use whatever visual aids you can find (e.g., letters that are easy to recognize or repeated phrases). When you feel comfortable enough doing this, try matching the transcription lines to a handwritten version of the dialog (you'll need to copy the dialog in Sindhi again for this part, but this time without the transcription).
